Kayes is a city located in western Mali on the banks of the Sénégal River. It serves as the capital of the administrative region of the same name and is situated approximately 420 kilometres (260 mi) northwest of the national capital, Bamako.
According to the 2009 census, the city had a population of 127,368. It serves as a regional hub within western Mali's administrative framework.
