Rutshuru is a town situated in the North Kivu province of the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It serves as the administrative headquarters for the Rutshuru Territory.
Geographically, the town is located within the western branch of the Albertine Rift, positioned between Lakes Edward and Kivu. It sits in close proximity to international boundaries, with the Ugandan border located 15 km (9.3 mi) to the east and the Rwandan border situated 30 km (19 mi) to the south-east.
