Butembo is a city located in the North Kivu province in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is situated on the Rwenzori graben and lies to the west of Virunga National Park. The region surrounding the city is primarily known for its production of tea and coffee.
The city serves as a significant commercial hub, housing large markets and an airport. It is home to several large hospitals and a cathedral, and it is recognized as a center for the most prosperous businessmen in the eastern part of the country. As of 2026, Butembo had an estimated population of 404,444.
