Basankusu is a town located in the Équateur Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It serves as the primary town and administrative center for the Basankusu Territory. As of 2004, the town had an estimated population of approximately 23,764 residents.
The town features a gravel airstrip, a hospital, covered and open markets, and three cellphone networks, with the first being established in 2006. It is notably recognized as a center for bonobo conservation efforts. While some infrastructure exists, most inhabitants live at a subsistence level, engaging in activities such as hunting, fishing, poultry keeping, and maintaining vegetable plots.
