Adelaide is the capital and most populous city of South Australia, ranking as the fifth-most populous city in Australia. The name may refer specifically to the Adelaide city centre or to the broader Greater Adelaide region. Residents of the city are known by the demonym Adelaidean.

The city is situated on the Adelaide Plains north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, positioned between the Gulf St Vincent to the west and the Mount Lofty Ranges to the east. The metropolitan area covers over 430 suburbs, extending approximately 96 km from Gawler in the north to Sellicks Beach in the south.

The traditional owners of the Adelaide region are the Kaurna people. In the Kaurna language, the name Tarndanya refers to the city centre and the surrounding Park Lands.
