Acadia was a colony of New France located in northeastern North America. Its territory encompassed regions that currently comprise parts of the Canadian Maritime provinces, the Gaspé Peninsula, and the state of Maine, extending as far as the Kennebec River.
The region was originally inhabited by various First Nations of the Wabanaki Confederacy, who referred to the area as Dawnland. Settlers who established the colony primarily originated from southwestern regions of France, specifically including Poitou-Charentes, Aquitaine, Poitou, and Anjou.
