Whitehorse is the capital city of Yukon and serves as the largest city in Northern Canada. It was officially incorporated in 1950 and is situated at kilometre 1426 on the Alaska Highway in the southern region of the Yukon territory.
The city's downtown and Riverdale areas are positioned on both shores of the Yukon River, a waterway that originates in British Columbia before flowing to the Bering Sea in Alaska. The name Whitehorse was derived from the White Horse Rapids, which were named for their resemblance to the mane of a white horse.
