Joliette is a city located in southwest Quebec, Canada. It sits on the banks of the L'Assomption River, approximately 50 kilometres northeast of Montreal. The city serves as the seat of the Regional County Municipality of Joliette.
The settlement was founded in 1823 by Barthélemy Joliette and Marie-Charlotte de Lanaudière. It was originally named L'Industrie, a name chosen to reflect its focus on land development, mills, and economic activity along the river. The city officially incorporated in 1863 at which point it changed its name to Joliette.
