The city is situated on the River Severn, positioned between the Cotswolds to the east and the Forest of Dean to the west. It sits approximately 17 miles east of the England and Wales border.

The city has a population of around 132,000, including its suburban areas. Gloucester serves as a port, maintaining a connection to the Severn Estuary via the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. It is located within 33 miles of Bristol and 7 miles from Cheltenham.
