Fort McMurray is an urban service area located in northeast Alberta, Canada, within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. It is situated in the middle of the Athabasca oil sands and is surrounded by boreal forest.
The city has played a significant role in the development of Canada's national petroleum industry. In 2016, the area was impacted by a major wildfire that caused widespread damage and necessitated the evacuation of its residents.
