Trongsa, formerly known as Tongsa, is a town and Thromde located in central Bhutan. The name of the settlement translates to "new village" in the Dzongkha language. It serves as the administrative capital of the Trongsa District.
The area holds historical significance as the site of Bhutan's first temple, which was constructed in 1543 by the Drukpa lama Ngagi Wangchuck. This figure is notable for being the great-grandfather of Ngawang Namgyal, also known as Zhabdrung Rinpoche, who is recognized as the unifier of Bhutan.
