Punakha is a city located in Bhutan that serves as the administrative center of Punakha dzongkhag, one of the country's 20 districts. Situated at an elevation of 1,200 metres above sea level, it was the capital of Bhutan and the seat of government until 1955, when the capital was relocated to Thimphu.
The city is located approximately 72 km from Thimphu, a journey that takes about three hours by car. The region experiences warm winters and hot summers, distinguishing its climate from that of the current capital. Punakha is situated along the river valleys of two main rivers, the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu, where rice serves as the primary crop. Dzongkha is the widely spoken language in this district.
