Mongar

Mongar is a town and the administrative seat of the Mongar District (Dzongkhag) located in eastern Bhutan. Situated along the road connecting Thimphu to Trashigang, it serves as an important regional center with facilities including a hospital, hotels, and various other amenities.

The town is recognized as one of the oldest educational hubs in the country. Notable landmarks include the Yagang Lhakhang monastery on its outskirts and the ruins of Zhongar Dzong, which have remained in ruin since 1889. As of 2022, the population of the Mongar District was estimated at 36,383 people.
