Osasco is a municipality located in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Situated within the Greater São Paulo area, it serves as the major urban center for the western portion of the region. The city officially became an independent municipality on February 19, 1962, after previously serving as a district of the city of São Paulo.
The city is characterized by high population density, comparable to that of New York City and Tokyo. As of the 2015 IBGE census, Osasco had a population of 699,944 residents across an area of 64.95 km2. It ranks as the fifth most populous municipality in the state of São Paulo and holds the ninth highest gross domestic product in Brazil.
The city's motto is "Urbs labor," a Latin phrase translating to "City work." Its economic standing is significant, ranking second in gross domestic product within the state of São Paulo.
