Porto Alegre is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Located in the southern region of Brazil, it serves as the southernmost capital city of any Brazilian state.
The city has a population of approximately 1.4 million inhabitants as of 2022, making it the 11th-most populous city in the country. It is also the center of Brazil's fifth-largest metropolitan area, which houses roughly 4.1 million people.
