Alegrete is a municipality located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. Situated at a medium altitude of 102 meters (335 feet), it serves as a significant geographical region within the state.
The municipality covers a total area of 7,803.967 km² (3,013.129 sq mi), which makes it the largest municipality by area in southern Brazil. As of 2020, the estimated population was 73,028 inhabitants, who are locally referred to as Alegretenses.
