São Gonçalo do Amarante is a municipality located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The city serves as a regional center within the northeastern portion of the country.

The location is associated with the legacy of Saint Gonçalo de Amarante (Gundisalvus of Amarante), a Portuguese Catholic priest and member of the Order of Preachers. Known for his life as a hermit following extensive pilgrimages to Rome and Jerusalem, he was beatified by Pope Pius IV in 1561.
