Duque de Caxias is a city located in the Rio de Janeiro region of Brazil. The name of the municipality is derived from Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, a prominent military officer, politician, and monarchist who served during the Empire of Brazil.
Known by the nicknames "the Peacemaker" and "the Iron Duke," Caxias was a significant historical figure who fought in the Brazilian War of Independence against Portugal starting in 1823. He later served in the Cisplatine War and remained loyal to the monarchy, eventually instructing and befriending Emperor Dom Pedro II.
