Belém is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Pará, located in the northern region of the country. Situated approximately 100 km upriver from the Atlantic Ocean on the Pará River, it serves as a major gateway to the Amazon River system. The city is separated from the larger part of the Amazon delta by Ilha de Marajó.
As a significant regional hub, Belém features a busy port, an airport, and a coach station. It is the second-largest city in Brazil's North Region, surpassed only by Manaus. With an estimated population of 1,398,531 people—or over 2.4 million when including its metropolitan area—it ranks as the 12th most populous city in Brazil and the 16th by economic relevance.
