Pirapora is a municipality located in northcentral Minas Gerais, Brazil. It covers a total area of 550 km2 (210 sq mi) and has a population of approximately 56,640 residents.
The name Pirapora originates from Tupi words meaning "fish" and "jump." This etymology refers to the piracema season, during which large masses of fish migrate up the São Francisco River to spawn.
