The city is primarily known for its religious and artistic significance as a pilgrimage site. It houses the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, which features twelve soapstone figures created by the artist Aleijadinho. These sculptures were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
