São Gonçalo do Amarante is a municipality located in the state of Ceará, Brazil. The city serves as a regional center within its geographic area, distinct from other locations sharing similar names.
The name of the city is associated with Gundisalvus of Amarante (also known as São Gonçalo), a Portuguese Catholic priest and member of the Order of Preachers. After returning from an extensive pilgrimage to Rome and Jerusalem, he lived as a hermit before being beatified by Pope Pius IV in 1561.
