Macapá is the capital city of the Brazilian state of Amapá, situated in the country's North Region. It is located on a small plateau on the Amazon River in the southeast of the state, specifically on the northern channel of the Amazon Delta near its mouth on the Atlantic Ocean. The city covers an area of 6,407.12 square kilometres and sits northwest of the inland island of Marajó and south of the border with French Guiana.
The city is notable for being intersected by the equator, which runs through its middle; as a result, residents frequently refer to Macapá as "The capital of the middle of the world." Regarding transportation, the only road access from outside the province is via the overseas French department of French Guiana. However, the city maintains regular ferry connections to Belém, Brazil, and is linked by road to other cities within Amapá.
