Marechal Deodoro is a city located in the Alagoas region of Brazil. It is named in honor of Manuel Deodoro da Fonseca, a prominent Brazilian politician and military officer who was born in the state of Alagoas.
Deodoro da Fonseca is historically significant as the first president of Brazil and the head of the provisional government that established the First Brazilian Republic in 1889. He rose to national prominence after leading a military coup that deposed Emperor Pedro II, effectively ending the Brazilian Empire. Although he was elected to the presidency in 1891, he resigned later that same year following significant political pressure.
