Asenovgrad is a town located in central southern Bulgaria within the Plovdiv Province. It serves as the administrative seat of the Asenovgrad Municipality and holds the distinction of being the largest town in Bulgaria that is not a provincial center.
The settlement was formerly known by the names Stanimaka or Stenimachos before it was renamed in 1934 to honor the 13th-century tsar Ivan Asen II. The municipality also encompasses the districts of Gorni Voden and Dolni Voden, which functioned as independent villages until 1986.
