Liège is a city and municipality located in the Wallonia region of Belgium. It serves as the capital of its eponymous province and is situated in the valley of the Meuse river in the eastern part of the country, near the borders with Germany and the Netherlands.
The city is geographically notable for being the location where the Meuse meets the river Ourthe. Historically, Liège was a key component of the sillon industriel, which served as the former industrial backbone of Wallonia. Today, it remains the principal economic and cultural center of the region.
