Aalter is a municipality situated in the Belgian province of East Flanders. It is geographically positioned between the cities of Bruges and Ghent.
The municipality comprises several towns, including Aalter, Bellem, Lotenhulle, Poeke, Knesselare, and Ursel. Its borders are defined by Maldegem to the north, Zomergem and Nevele to the east, Deinze to the south, and the province of West Flanders to the west.
The current mayor of Aalter is Pieter De Crem.
