Durgapur is a major industrial hub and planned urban agglomeration located in the Paschim Bardhaman district of the Indian state of West Bengal. Situated on the northern bank of the Damodar river, the city was developed starting in 1955 through the planning efforts of Bidhan Chandra Roy, Joseph Allen Stein, and Benjamin Polk.
The city is a primary center for steel production and train wheel manufacturing in India, earning it the nickname "Steel Backbone of Industrial Bengal." Additionally, Durgapur has recently been developed as a hub for the Indian IT industry. It is also notable for being the only city in eastern India to possess an operational dry dock.
