Birgunj is a metropolitan city located in the Parsa District of Madhesh Province in southern Nepal. It is situated approximately 135 km south of the national capital, Kathmandu, and is positioned on the border with India, adjacent to the town of Raxaul in the state of Bihar.
The city is widely recognized as the "Gateway of Nepal" and the "Commercial Capital of Nepal" due to its significant economic role. It serves as a primary entry point for trade between Nepal and India, with the majority of bilateral commerce flowing through Birgunj and Raxaul. The Tribhuvan Highway provides the main terrestrial link connecting the city to Kathmandu.
