Nilphamari is a city located in the heart of the Nilphamari District within the Rangpur Division of Bangladesh. It serves as the administrative headquarters for the district and stands as one of the primary urban centers in the country's northern region. Due to its economic significance, it is frequently referred to as the "Industrial City of the North."
The city was established in 1875 following the formation of the Mohokuma/Sub-Division Office of Nilphamari at Shakhamacha Hat on the banks of the Bamondanga River. It derives its name from "Nilphamari," which is the cultural and historical name for the region.
