Situated approximately 16 kilometers southeast of the capital city, it serves as the primary urban center of the Narayanganj District. With a population of nearly one million people, it ranks as the fifth-largest city in the country.
The city is a significant hub for business and industry, particularly within the textile sector and the jute trade. It houses numerous jute processing plants and mills, which has earned Narayanganj the nickname "Dundee of Bangladesh."
