West Toodyay is a location in Western Australia situated within the Toodyay valley, approximately 85 kilometres north-east of Perth. It served as the original site for the town of Toodyay before the settlement was relocated to higher ground.
The Toodyay valley was discovered by Ensign Robert Dale in 1831 and opened for settlement in 1836. While the boundaries for the original town site were finalized in 1838, the first survey of the area occurred in 1849. Following several serious floods, the town was moved upstream to a new location.
In 1860, a new town called Newcastle was established three miles further upstream from the original site. This new settlement was renamed Toodyay in 1910, while the original location became known as West Toodyay.
