St Albans is a cathedral city located in Hertfordshire, England. It is situated approximately 20 miles (32 km) north-west of London, positioned east of Hemel Hempstead and west of Hatfield. The city lies roughly 8 miles (13 km) south-west of Welwyn Garden City and 11 miles (18 km) south-east of Luton.
Historically, St Albans served as the first major town on the old Roman road of Watling Street for travelers heading north. During the Roman period, it was known as the city of Verulamium. The current population of the city is 82,146.
