Hobart is the capital and most populous city of the Australian island state of Tasmania. Situated in the state's south-east on the estuary of the River Derwent, it holds the distinction of being the southernmost capital city in Australia. The metropolitan area is frequently referred to as Greater Hobart to distinguish it from the City of Hobart, which is one of seven local government areas covering the region.
While Hobart contains nearly half of Tasmania's population, it remains the least-populated Australian state capital city and the second-smallest by population and area when territories are included. The city features a mild maritime climate and a skyline dominated by kunanyi / Mount Wellington, which stands at 1,271 metres. Additionally, its harbour is recognized as the second-deepest natural port in the world, with much of the waterfront composed of reclaimed land.
