Adelaide is the capital and most populous city of South Australia, ranking as the fifth-most populous city in Australia. The name "Adelaide" can refer specifically to the Adelaide city centre or more broadly to Greater Adelaide. Residents of the city are known by the demonym Adelaidean.
The city is situated on the Adelaide Plains north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, positioned between the Gulf St Vincent to the west and the Mount Lofty Ranges to the east. Its metropolitan area covers over 430 suburbs, extending approximately 96 km from Gawler in the north to Sellicks Beach in the south, and 20 km from the western coast to the eastern foothills of the Mount Lofty Ranges.
The traditional owners of the Adelaide region are the Kaurna people. In the Kaurna language, the name Tarndanya refers to the area encompassing the city centre and the surrounding Park Lands.
