Hervey Bay is a coastal city located in the Fraser Coast Region of Queensland, Australia. It is situated approximately 290 kilometres (180 mi) north of Brisbane, accessible by a 3½-hour highway drive. The city sits on Hervey Bay, which opens to the Coral Sea between the Queensland mainland and the nearby island of K'gari.
The local economy is primarily driven by tourism, specifically centered on whale watching in Platypus Bay, recreational fishing, boating, and ferry access to K'gari. The area is characterized by its natural north-facing calm beaches and wide undeveloped foreshore zones. In October 2019, the city was designated as the world's first Whale Heritage Site by the World Cetacean Alliance in recognition of its commitment to sustainable whale and dolphin watching practices.
