San Miguel de Tucumán, commonly referred to as Tucumán, is the capital and largest city of the Tucumán Province in northern Argentina. It is situated approximately 1,311 kilometres (815 miles) from the national capital, Buenos Aires. As a major urban center, it ranks as the fifth-largest city in Argentina, following Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Rosario, and Mendoza.
The city was originally founded in 1565 by the Spanish conquistador Diego de Villarroel during an expedition originating from present-day Peru. While established in the mid-16th century, Tucumán moved to its current location in 1685. It remains the most significant city within Argentina's northern region.
