General Roca

Argentina

General Roca is a city located in the northeast of the Argentine province of Río Negro, situated within the northern Patagonia region. It was established on September 1, 1879, by Colonel Lorenzo Vintter under the orders of War Minister Julio A. Roca during the Conquest of the Desert.

The original site of the first settlement was known as Fiske Menuco by the native Mapuche people, a name that translates to "deep water." This initial location was destroyed in 1899 following a major flooding of the Río Negro river. Consequently, the city was rebuilt five kilometers northwest on higher ground.
