Neuquén is the capital city of the Argentine province of Neuquén and serves as the seat of the Confluencia Department. It is situated in the extreme east of the province on a strip of land located west of the confluence of the Limay and Neuquén rivers, which join to form the Río Negro.
The city is part of the Alto Valle del Río Negro ecoregion. According to the 2022 Census, Neuquén had a population of 287,787 inhabitants. When combined with the surrounding Neuquén – Plottier – Cipolletti conurbation, which exceeds 500,000 people, it constitutes the largest urban agglomeration in Patagonia.
