Savate, also known as French Boxing or French Foot Fighting, is a French hybrid martial art and full-contact combat sport. It combines the principles of western boxing with a wide variety of kicking techniques. While it shares similarities with kickboxing, savate specifically involves kicking exclusively with the feet rather than using knee or shin strikes during competitive bouts.
A notable characteristic of the sport is that participants are required to wear footwear while competing, reflecting its origins as a street fighting style. In this discipline, practitioners can target any part of the body with their kicks and punches. A male practitioner of savate is referred to as a "tireur," while a female practitioner is called a "tireuse."
