The Cabiri (also known as Cabeiri, Kabeiri, or Kabiri) were a group of enigmatic chthonic deities in Greek mythology. They were primarily worshipped within a mystery cult that was closely associated with the god Hephaestus.
The primary centers for the worship of these deities were located in the north Aegean Islands, specifically on Lemnos and possibly at the temple complex on Samothrace, as well as in Thebes. While the cult on Lemnos remained a local practice, the mystery cult associated with Samothrace spread extensively throughout the Greek world during the Hellenistic period, eventually becoming initiated by Romans.
Scholars suggest that the origins of the Cabiri and the Samothracian gods may include pre-Greek or non-Greek elements. These potential influences are thought to include Thracian, Tyrrhenian, Pelasgian, Phrygian, or Hittite traditions.
