Mbanza Kongo is located in northwestern Angola and serves as the capital of the Zaire Province. As of 2024, the city has a population of approximately 221,141.
The site holds significant historical importance as it was the capital of the Kingdom of Kongo from its foundation until the kingdom's abolition in 1915. While it experienced a brief period of abandonment during civil wars in the 17th century, it remained a primary seat of power before and after the arrival of the Portuguese in 1483.
Due to its historical significance, Mbanza Kongo was officially declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017.
