Sutherland is a historic county, registration county, and lieutenancy area located in the Highlands of Scotland. The region encompasses some of the northernmost land on the island of Great Britain.
The name Sutherland dates back to the Viking era when the territory was ruled by the Jarl of Orkney. From the perspective of Orkney and Caithness, the area was historically referred to as Suðrland.
