The term savanna generally refers to a mixed woodland-grassland ecosystem where trees are spaced widely enough that the canopy does not close. This open structure allows light to reach the ground, supporting an unbroken layer of herbaceous vegetation, primarily grasses. There are four distinct forms of this biome: savanna woodland, tree savanna, shrub savanna, and grass savanna.
