Herat, also known as Harat or Hirat, is a city located in western Afghanistan. It serves as the capital and largest city of Herat Province, situated within the jurisdiction of the Herat District.
Historically referred to by names such as Haraiva, Horeiva, and Hires, the city has long been recognized as the third-largest city in Afghanistan. The current population of settled residents is estimated at 673,273. Mullah Nematullah Hassan serves as the city's mayor, succeeding Haji Abdulraziq Rashed.
