Bala Murghab is a city located in the Badghis Province of Afghanistan. Situated along the Murghab River, it serves as the administrative center for the Bala Murghab District. It holds the distinction of being the largest city within the province.
The surrounding Bala Murghab District is the most populous district in the province, with a recorded population of 109,381. The area is notable for its proximity to the ruins of Marw al-Rudh, which served as the historical capital of the medieval region of Gharjistan.
During the War in Afghanistan, the city was a site of heavy contention between the Taliban and Afghan National Security Forces. It was eventually captured by the Taliban during their offensive in 2021.
