Mashhad, historically known as Mashad, Meshhed, or Meshed, is located in the north-east of Iran. Situated approximately 740 kilometres east of the capital city of Tehran, it serves as the capital of Razavi Khorasan province, as well as its namesake county and Central District.
The city is the second-most-populous urban center in Iran, with a population of about 3,400,000. This population figure encompasses the areas of Mashhad, Taman, and Torqabeh.
