Overview
Central Asia is a vast region at the heart of the Asian continent, comprising Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and most of Kazakhstan. These five nations are often referred to collectively as the "-stans," a name derived from the Persian suffix "-stan," meaning "land of," which appears in each country's name in both their native languages and most other languages worldwide.
Geographic Boundaries
Central Asia occupies a distinctive position, bordered by several major geographic and political regions:
- The Caspian Sea lies to the southwest
- European Russia borders the region to the northwest
- China and Mongolia lie to the east
- Iran and the Indian subcontinent are situated to the south
- Siberia extends along the northern edge
This central location has historically made the region a crossroads between Europe and Asia, linking diverse civilizations, trade routes, and cultures.
Population
The five countries that make up Central Asia have a combined population of approximately 76 million people. This population is spread across a wide variety of landscapes, from expansive steppes and deserts to towering mountain ranges, reflecting the region's diverse environmental and cultural character.
