Portugal

Overview

Portugal, officially the Portuguese Republic, is a country located in Southwestern Europe. It is a unitary republic comprising mainland Portugal, which sits on the southwestern portion of the Iberian Peninsula, along with the Atlantic archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores. Mainland Portugal is bordered by Spain to the north and east, making Spain its only land neighbor.

Geography

Portugal's territory extends well beyond its continental borders. The country's internal waters and territorial sea together account for two-fifths of its total territory, reflecting the significance of its maritime domain. Additionally, Portugal maintains one of the largest exclusive economic zones in Europe, underscoring its historical and ongoing relationship with the Atlantic Ocean.

The nation's terrain is notably diverse, encompassing a wide range of landscapes and regional climates. This variety spans from the mainland's Iberian geography to the volcanic landscapes of the Azores and the mountainous terrain of Madeira.

Population and Capital

Portugal has a population of over 11.4 million people. Lisbon serves as both the capital and the largest city of the country, functioning as the primary center of political, economic, and cultural life in Portugal.
