Overview
Fiji, officially the Republic of Fiji, is an archipelagic nation in Melanesia, a region within Oceania in the South Pacific Ocean. It is situated roughly 1,100 nautical miles north-northeast of New Zealand, placing it at a crossroads of the South Pacific that has long made it a hub for travel, trade, and culture in the region.
Geography
Fiji is made up of an extensive archipelago comprising more than 330 islands, of which about 110 are permanently inhabited, along with over 500 smaller islets. Altogether, the country's total land area amounts to approximately 18,300 square kilometres (7,100 square miles). The most remote island group in Fiji is Ono-i-Lau, lying at the outer edge of the archipelago.
The vast majority of Fiji's population is concentrated on its two largest islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, which together are home to about 87% of all Fijians. Viti Levu, the largest island, hosts the bulk of the country's population along its coastline, while its mountainous, forested interior remains sparsely populated due to its rugged terrain.
Major Cities and Settlements
- Suva – The capital city of Fiji, located on Viti Levu, serves as the country's political, economic, and cultural center.
- Nadi – A smaller urban center on Viti Levu, widely known as the gateway to Fiji due to its international airport and proximity to popular tourist resorts.
- Lautoka – Another significant coastal town on Viti Levu, historically tied to the country's sugar industry.
About three-quarters of the Fijian population resides along the coasts of Viti Levu, reflecting the island's role as the demographic and economic heart of the nation.
